Banking

The banking practice in the Netherlands has extensive experience in structured finance transactional work including project finance (both energy & infrastructure), trade & commodity finance and Islamic finance. The team advise some of the biggest institutions in foreign and domestic markets on complex cross-border transactions.

We are recommended by Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners Europe as having a strong banking practice in the Netherlands. Our lawyers regularly lecture and write on a broad range of banking matters: Gijs van Leeuwen and Wouter Hertzberger write the Netherlands chapter of the PLC Cross-Border Handbook on Secured Lending; and Paul Vine co-writes the Financial Markets and Insolvency chapter of the reference work Gore-Browne on Companies.

Project Finance

We have a wealth of experience in infrastructure projects, particularly in the power and renewable energy sector, as well as advising on major road PPPs. Headed by Wouter Hertzberger, the Netherlands project finance practice has been, and continues to be, at the heart of some of the largest and most complex PPP deals - we are currently advising on the two biggest project financing deals in the Netherlands.

We are amongst the preferred legal services providers for some of the biggest project financing banks in the Dutch and international markets. We also regularly advise developers, project companies and government bodies.

Trade and Commodities Finance

Our trade and commodities finance practice is led by Gijs van Leeuwen. We act on a wide range of matters from the financing of international trade (ECA backed facilities, LCs and receivables financing) to structured commodities finance and commodities trading and clearing. Within the sector, we work regularly with the full chain of market participants including financial institutions (ABN Amro, HSBC, HBOS, Riyad Bank), exporters (Motorola and Cisco), commodity houses and exchanges.

Islamic Finance

Although this is a developing field in the Netherlands, Norton Rose Group has one of the most experienced Islamic Finance teams in the Dutch market. Headed by Paul Vine, the team is involved with a number of financial institutions in this area. We focus primarily on banking (non-capital markets) transactions out of the Amsterdam office but within that cover the full range of advice from structuring transactions with experienced participants to training and developing more basic products for new market entrants.
